Question 1

What is a Sylvester Palm?

Accepted Answer

A Sylvester Palm (Phoenix sylvestris), also called a Silver Date Palm, is an ornamental palm tree known for its silvery-green, feather shaped fronds and sturdy textured trunk. Its distinctive trunk and symmetrical canopy, along with its towering heights make it especially popular for entrances, driveways and resort-style landscapes.

Question 2

How cold tolerant is a Sylvester Palm?

Accepted Answer

Established Sylvester Palms are cold hardy down to 15°F and thrive in zones 8b-11. Cold tolerance does not mean the foliage remains undamaged, the length of the freeze, exposure, palm health, and where it was raised affect the outcome. Palms raised in cold hardy farms (such as Iguana palms) have better cold-tolerance than those raised further south in warmer conditions.

Question 3

How fast does a Sylvester Palm grow?

Accepted Answer

Sylvester Palms grow at a moderate pace, their growth rate depends on the climate and growing conditions, and the warmer the region, the faster they grow. Sylvester Palms can grow anywhere from 1-2 feet per year.

Question 4

How tall do Sylvester Palms grow?

Accepted Answer

A mature Sylvester Palm typically reaches 40-50 feet of height, and its canopy can be 20-25 feet across. When choosing a planting location, allow space for the mature fronds and avoid overhead utility lines.

Question 5

Is a Sylvester Palm the same as a Silver Date Palm?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sylvester Palm and Silver Date Palm are common names for the same palm, and the botanical name is Phoenix sylvestris. It belongs to the same genus as the Canary Island Date Palm and the edible Date Palm.

Question 6

What size Sylvester Palm will I receive?

Accepted Answer

Your Sylvester Palm size depends on the trunk height you select. Iguana Palms offers specimens from 3 to 30 feet of trunk, subject to availability. Trunk height measures the trunk rather than the fill trunk, so the canopy adds to the overall height.

Question 7

What growing conditions does a Sylvester Palm need?

Accepted Answer

Sylvester Palms prefer full sun and well-draining soil. They tolerate sandy soils and become drought tolerant once established, but newly planted palms require regular watering while their roots develop. Proper palm fertilization and regular maintenance help support healthy growth and attractive foliage. If you need help maintaining your palms, contact us.

Question 8

Can a Sylvester Palm grow in my climate?

Accepted Answer
